We continue to develop business strategies related to ENERGY STAR product selection in our stores and online. SHC strives to lead the way in promoting energy-efficient products to our customers, allowing them access to quality goods while saving energy and money.
In 2017, SHC offered more than 800 unique ENERGY STAR certified models across categories such as lighting, appliances, consumer electronics, doors, windows and HVAC. In appliances alone, SHC saw a 9.5 percent increase in ENERGY STAR certified products over 2016 numbers. Sears Holdings' Green Leadership Team® works to promote energy-efficient and ENERGY STAR certified products and services while communicating their economic and environmental benefits to our members, customers and associates. The team accomplishes this by establishing strategic relationships with various members of the energy efficiency industry, such as utility companies across the U.S., the EPA and various program administrators. These collaborations have brought impactful energy saving programs to our stakeholders using new channels and touch points that help our customers stay engaged in energy efficiency practices.
Sears Home Services
Sears Home Services is the nation's number one provider of appliance services with more than 5,000 expert technicians who made nearly 11 million service call in the 2017 Fiscal Year. As the trusted leader in appliance repair, we constantly innovate to improve the repair experience and make managing a home easier for our members - we truly are the "House Experts for Homeowners."
We are proud to have earned the trust of our members and continues to find new ways to serve them by embracing innovation and technology. In 2017, we equipped all of our technicians with GoToAssist Seeit on their smartphones. This technology allows our field technicians to share live videos and high-res images of complex appliance issues with a master technician who may be located remotely. The master technician can then help quickly diagnose the issue and coach the field technician through the repair. This new technology empowers our technicians to fix appliances faster, reduce number of visits to a member’s home and subsequently reduce miles traveled and fuel consumed by our service vans.
Sears Home Services expanded their participation in the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program to Florida when they partnered with CounterPointe Energy Solutions LLC to launch the Alliance NRG program in 2017. This program leverages Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing options to assist homeowners to fund energy efficient home improvements.
Our Home Improvement team, a part of the Home Services Business Unit, continues to show strong ENERGY STAR certified product sales and is proud to have completed 99 percent of their door and window installations with ENERGY STAR certified products. Additionally, our Home Improvement team works closely with our vendors to source environmentally responsible products:
American Cabinetry Collection, Sears Home Improvement's branded cabinets, is certified as a participant in the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer's Associations Environmental Stewardship Program. The voluntary certification program provides uniform industry standards and illustrates a commitment to sound environmental management and sustainable practices.
Our Home Improvement assortment in flooring includes products by Shaw, a company with a rich history and commitment to sustainability. In 2017, Shaw Industries announced that 85 percent of their products were Cradle-to-Cradle Certified™, a program that ensures a regenerative approach to production and views materials as healthy and safe nutrients within a circular economy. Additionally, 100 percent of Shaw's hardwood and laminate flooring is GREENGUARD Certified.
We are proud to offer Cosentino countertops which have received UL Environment's Greenguard Certification. This certification helps to identify interior products and materials that have low chemical emissions and improve the air quality in our members' homes.
All of our bath products are CALGreen Compliant, including low flow fixtures and toilets. CALGreen is a green building code which aims to reduce waste, greenhouse gas emissions and conserve water.

The launch of Kenmore products on Amazon.com has significantly expanded the distribution and availability of the Kenmore brand in the U.S. Additionally, Kenmore's full line of smart appliances are Alexa-enabled, allowing customers new ways to interact with and utilize home automation.
The DieHard brand and its vendor partners are committed to the corporate sustainability efforts of Sears Holdings. Own Brand Products
We continue to grow and develop our own brand products and in 2017 the unit penetration of the assortment grew from 10 percent of total units to 14 percent. Here are a few of our own brand products that we are particularly proud of:
- All Little Ones liquid toiletries are paraben and BPA-free. Parabens and BPA have been linked to allergic reactions, alterations in estrogen levels and hormonal and behavioral changes.
- Smart Sense bottled water is made from 100 percent recyclable material and Eco-Air® certified packaging. Our manufacturing partner states: We have eliminated the need for a cardboard tray and our cases take up less pallet space, which allows us to ship more water per order and subsequently reduce our CO2 emissions. We have also reduced the amount of plastic used in our water bottles by 60 percent over the last 15 years. This reduced weight allows the use of less energy in production, reducing the carbon footprint of the product.
- Many of our Smart Sense household goods (bath tissue, paper towel, facial tissue, etc.) carry the Rainforest Alliance accredited Forest Stewardship Council certification. This certification ensures products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
- Most of our food containers carry the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified Sourcing Label.
- Many of our Smart Sense cleaning supplies (sprays and triggers) are free of CFCs or other ozone-depleting substances. Our Smart Sense carpet cleaners (Deep Clean and Pet) carry the EPA’s Safer Choice logo which helps our members identify products with safer chemical ingredients.
- Cat & Co. Premium Cat Litter uses 100 percent natural scents made from natural oils that are chemical free and safe for humans and pets. Recycled plastic is used in a portion of the product's packaging and recycled corrugate is used in the product's shipper boxes.
- Many of our Smart Sense candy uses sustainably sourced palm oil, certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
In 2017, we significantly reduced the number of Kmart stores to carry tobacco products and we are proud to announce that by 2018, none of our U.S. mainland stores will carry tobacco products.
In the U.S., an estimated 40 percent of food goes uneaten*. At Kmart, we are continuously working to reduce food waste in our operations by implementing more efficient systems and processes. In 2017, we were able to reduce food waste in our stores by 22 percent (based on cost of goods sold).
In August, we opened our first telepharmacy in Des Plaines, Illinois. An off-site Kmart pharmacist works with a certified pharmacy technician on-site to perform the same quality checks and, when necessary, can speak with patients located at the Des Plaines store using video chat on a handheld tablet. The telepharmacy format will give us a greater ability to service remote communities. By the end of 2017, three telepharmacies had opened with additional locations planned for 2018 and 2019.
Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico with the strongest storm in 85 years but that didn’t stop Kmart from serving its members. Kmart Pharmacists administered over 1,000 flu vaccines alone within the first weeks of recovery efforts.
In addition, the Kmart Pharmacy team expedited thousands of doses of flu vaccines to the island in an effort to respond quickly to the needs of the islanders. Kmart Pharmacy worked directly with local government agencies including the Puerto Rico Health Department to hold pop-up clinics for hundreds of people in areas that desperately needed to vaccinate people against the flu, pneumonia and to protect against other hurricane related illnesses. Kmart pharmacists worked directly with medical doctors' offices to help supply vaccines to patients and held dozens of off-site clinics in nursing homes, local schools and low-income housing areas all over the island in an effort to respond to the needs of the local people who lacked transportation.
Kmart pharmacies on the island are open full time and are fully stocked with vaccines, proudly serving as an important wellness destination for the more than three million people of Puerto Rico. As the residents of the island continue their rebuilding efforts, our Kmart pharmacists will be helping customers every step of the way.
Every day, more than 115 Americans die as a result of an opioid overdose.** In 2018, we plan to make naloxone, the opioid overdose-reversal medication, available without a prescription at Kmart pharmacies in states where it is permitted. Our pharmacists will be equipped with the training and resources needed to recommend, dispense and educate the people of our communities who need the lifesaving drug.
Through our collaboration with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), Kmart Pharmacy has provided more than 20,000 memory screenings to the members of our communities. This collaboration has helped raise awareness about Alzheimer's and provided people with information on ways to optimize brain health. In 2018, we will offer free screenings nationwide during "Older Americans Month" in May and "Alzheimer's Awareness Month" in November.
“Kmart Pharmacists have provided thousands of free memory screenings, teaming with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. This is a great example of how Kmart Pharmacy has long been a trusted wellness destination for patients, going far beyond simply filling prescriptions. These screenings have proven to be an invaluable service that truly deepen the relationship with the patients we serve and the members shopping in our stores."
